Artist Wanted - Residential Installation

Title: Large residential installation

My husband and I live in a condo in downtown Chicago and are building a home in Indiana on the lakefront of Lake Michigan. We’d love to work with an artist to craft a unique piece for the new Indiana house that would be directly installed onto a large wall – be it painted, sprayed, papered, textured, textile, etc – we’re open to any medium and to working with an artist to craft an installation.

The house is two stories connected by an open staircase that sits underneath a large clerestory. That staircase is the central focus of the house tying together the upper and lower floors and bringing light into the lower floor while being the focus of all the main public areas of the home.
The space available for installation is at least 10’ x 10’ but has more flexibility given the way the staircase is designed. For example, we’re open to the piece being created on a diagonal to follow the path of the staircase as well as rectilinear or any other shape that you’re inspired by and fits the available wall space.

We see the house as a place of harmony, rest, community (a place to share with family and friends), joy and nature. The house will be a modern house of mostly glass and natural materials such as stone and wood. The house sits on top of a dune that runs down to the lakefront – a beautiful and private spot surrounded by the beauty, repose and inspiration of nature.

Fee: This will be a paid commission with the fee TBD based on discussions and concept and paid in installments.

Timing: The house will be complete spring 2018 but we’d like to work with an artist this summer to develop a piece so that we can design the furniture and finishes around the art. The fee will be paid in portions so that you will be paid for your planning and drafting time now, with the remainder of the fee paid upon the complete installation.

Location for Installation: Dune Acres, Indiana. About 60 min drive east of downtown Chicago.

Process: If interested, please submit some samples of your work to bkronfeld@gmail.com so we can narrow down the candidate pool. Upon request, if not already included in the post, we can provide an elevation of the staircase and the space that can be filled with your art piece as well as some photos of the surrounding landscape for inspiration. Potential candidates will have a phone conversation to clarify the scope and answer questions and for us to learn more about your design and art aesthetic. Further samples or detailed architectural plans will be exchanged as needed and next steps will be determined.

Notes from AAA Career Services: Client prefers modern/abstract in style over traditional/representational, but those might be considered as well. She loves 3-dimensional texture and also something soft/durable as there will be kids interacting with the work in the home.

Volunteer Art Teacher

Do you consider yourself to be really creative and artistic?  Do you have a strong appreciation for art history and an interest in visual arts?  Are you motivated by the idea that all kids should access to arts classes to help with their overall successful and development?  We provide the girls in our program with a high quality, comprehensive visual arts curriculum. Students learn about works of art from cultures around the world, how to look at art using art vocabulary and concepts; and how to express themselves by creating their own unique masterpieces. Our curriculum introduces and reinforces foundational concepts like drawing, painting, and sculpture techniques. The multifaceted lessons develop students' critical-thinking skills, creativity, visual literacy, self-esteem, and an appreciation of other cultures.  Well, if your interest has been piqued, you may have stumbled upon an amazing internship opportunity that will be as rewarding as it impactful.
Super 7 Girls would not function without the help of summer interns.  Given that we operate an intensive after school program during the school year, we use the Summer to refine our programming as well as create new programming.  Summer interns help us in this process and help us to do this more effectively.  The ability of interns to redirect their focus from week to week, day to day, hour to hour and sometimes minute to minute is critical to the successful operation of this summer internship.  This internship requires for you to be positive, solutions-oriented, resourceful and flexible.  We value having divergent thinkers who bring various experiences and viewpoints to Super 7 Girls.
About Super 7 Girls
Super 7 Girls mission is simple - We help girls from under-resourced communities of color have superpowers (you read that right!). Now, when we talk about superpowers we don’t mean that in the metaphysical sense. When we discuss superpowers we are discussing a certain mindset. By helping girls build various skill sets that they need, they will feel emboldened, confident, smarter and…yep, you got it…superpowered. They will know that there is nothing that they are unable to conquer and that no challenge is too great.
So, you must be curious?!? How does one go about giving superpowers? We know that superpowers grow from consistent access to curriculum that focuses on education, health, financial literacy, policy, arts, leadership development, and global engagement and this consistent access helps the girls have a deep understanding of how their increased knowledge means a stronger ability to take on life’s challenges. We also know that their increased knowledge base disrupts the cycle of generational poverty and transforms the life outcomes and trajectories of the girls in our program. In essence, their superpowers enhance their overall well-being and helps them dream new dreams.
As you can see, we have big, hairy, audacious goals and we need bold volunteers to act as role models of this superpower mindset – visionary, courageous, confident, determined and reflective. Our environment is fast paced and dynamic and volunteers work hard. With that said, what makes our culture amazing is that everyone is willing to help with any task because we are all working towards the goal of helping these girls be amazing superpowered individuals.
