Next Wave Art Salon

$3000 in prize money. No entry/hanging fees, no commission, no jurying and no judges.

The Next Wave Art Salon 2013 Poster Art
$3000 in prize money. No entry/hanging fees, no commission, no jurying and no judges. Sign up here.
4 years ago, a handful of volunteers got together and started an experimental art event. We saw how artists were being excluded from participating in art events based on economic or aesthetic rules set by a cloistered minority. We wanted to see if we could open a spontaneous temporary space for cultural and economic lines to blur and create something different.
The result is a pretty successful little event called The Next Wave Art Salon, and it's based around the following rules:
·         Censorship - All work should be allowed, as long as it doesn't break local laws or create a risk of injury
·         Commission - Artists should keep 100% of whatever they make from selling their work
·         Fees - No artist should have to pay to have their work shown to the public, and the public shouldn't have to pay to see art
·         Jury - Any artist, no matter their age, level or medium should be allowed to participate and show any kind of work
·         Awards - Artists should be rewarded for their time and effort spent birthing something new into the world with cold hard cash
·         Space - Any unoccupied space can be creatively adapted and used for the enjoyment of art
The Details:
Visual artists will be given space to exhibit two pieces of their work (no piece of art can be larger than 10'x10'). Performance and dance artists will have a stage to perform, and film/video will be shown in a multimedia space. The Salon is open to all artists, all ages, all genres. If you have the courage to show it, we will put it up. (excluding art that causes bodily harm to people who gaze on upon it-or stuff that breaks local laws).
This year The Next Wave Art Salon will be held at 166 Symphony Way in downtown Elgin, just one block east of The Centre of Elgin, behind the Douglas Street Bar. The event will take place from 6 to 10 p.m. Friday, Sept. 6 and 4 to 10 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 7. The salon is free and open to the public.
More info can be found on the FAQ.
Sounds like a good time? Great!
  1. Fill out the form and register at http://www.thenextwave.me/2013/sign-up/
  2. Create 2 new pieces of work or bring 2 existing pieces
  3. Mark your calendar for the drop-off dates ( August 29th-30th, 6pm-9pm, August 31st 12pm-4pm and September 1st, 12pm-4pm. We will send you an email reminder).
  4. The event will take place from 6pm to 10pm Friday, Sept. 6th and 4pm to 10pm Saturday, Sept. 7th
Help me reach more artists!
If you know any artists that might be interested, please send them a link to this post, to the site or to the page on Facebook.   I've witnessed this event touch the lives of some ignored and marginalized artists and I'm hoping to reach more folks as it grows and catches on.

WITHIN - Call for Self Portraits

WITHIN

33 Contemporary Gallery presents:
WITHIN
An exhibition of self-portrait works within the
confines of 12" x 12" x 12"

The 9th Annual National Self-Portrait Exhibition 2013

July 19 to August 10, 2013

ABOUT
"WITHIN" celebrates nine consecutive years of successful national self-portrait exhibitions. Over the years, over 900 artists have participated in this annual event which began nine years ago as 33 Contemporary Gallery opened its its doors to the public for the very first time at the Zhou B Art Center in Chicago.
Unlike the past two years in which the exhibition had no size restrictions and took place in the entire first floor of the Zhou B Art Center, WITHIN will be hosted in the intimate gallery setting of 33 Contemporary Gallery. The works in the exhibition will not exceed 12 inches in any direction and will ask the viewer to experience the entire show in close proximity. This intimate setting will serve as an invitation for exporation, discovery and conversation.
Between July 19 and August 10 of this year, 33 Contemporary Gallery will become a national laboratory for the exploration and visual representation of the self. The exhibition will include works ranging from representational, non-representational and conceptual ideas of the self. It will feature works in a variety of media.
The National Self-Portrait Exhibition has become one of 33 Contemporary Gallery's most viewed and anticipated exhibitions. Now in its 9th year, the self-portrait exhibition will focus on the "miniature representation of self". All works selected will also be part of the online exhibition. This exhibition showcases high quality works from artists from all over the United States working in a wide range of media and styles.
This will be the last year of the Self Portrait Exhibition as a national open call. The 10th Annual National Self-Portrait Exhibition of 2014 will be open ONLY to artists who have participated in previous self-portrait shows. Therefore, this is your last chance to enter. After 10 years of successful exhibitions, the National Self Portrait will end with its las exhibition scheduled at the Zhou B Art Center in 2014.
WITHIN invites artists in all media to limit their self-portrait works to the confines of 12 inches because BIG is not always better.
