Student Art Contest - Blizzard Entertainment

Students, get ready to show off your talents: the Student Art contest has arrived!
Blizzard Entertainment’s university relations and World of Warcraft development teams are proud to present the second annual Blizzard Student Art Contest! This year, we’re calling on college and university students to submit an original environment piece and/or original character piece that would be a great fit for World of Warcraft. Check out the rules and information below....

Environment Contest

Using your creativity and ability to work within the World of Warcraft art style, create a small environment diorama that would fit well in the game world. Your quest: Concept, model, and texture an environment piece that you could imagine stumbling upon during your travels across Kalimdor, the Eastern Kingdoms, Outland, Northrend, or Pandaria.
Required elements are trees, rocks, grass, and props, plus a small structure (such as a shrine).
Your final piece should have a structure similar to the example provided below. We’re looking for lower poly-count models (e.g.: around 1,500 polys for a mature sized tree), so keep that in mind when creating your environment.
Sample submission - Click to enlarge

Character Contest

Using your creativity and ability to work within the World of Warcraft art style, concept, model, and texture a non-player character (NPC) or creature that you could imagine roaming the plains of Durotar, exploring the depths of Deepholm, or just sitting in the Pig and Whistle Tavern knocking back a mug o’ Thistle Tea.
Required elements are the character or creature, along with some sort of clothing or armor. Feel free to go further by adding weapons or other accessories.
The final piece should have a structure similar to the example provided below. Stay within a budget of 6,000 polys with one 1024x1024 texture for the finished character.
Sample submission - Click to enlarge
In short, show us something we’ve never seen before but that still fits within World of Warcraft. You can see the submissions of previous winners here.
All entries must be received by January 15, 2013, and must meet the image-formatting requirements (high-resolution JPEG no greater than 5MB in size) in the official rules in order to be eligible to win. Please note that only current college and university students are eligible to win. Students may enter pieces in both the environment and character contests (one entry per content).

Prizes

Grand prize winners will be chosen by the World of Warcraft art team, and will receive the following epic prizes:
  • A three-month mentorship by a member of the World of Warcraft art team, in the form of email or phone critique of portfolio work. (Contact frequency will be roughly every two weeks.)
  • A one-year subscription to World of Warcraft
  • A Blizzard Entertainment notebook (featuring an original sketch by a Blizzard artist)

Attention Artists of All Media: The Capital Grille Now Accepting Submissions for 2012 Wine Label Design Competition

The Capital Grille is now accepting artwork submissions for its fourth-annual Artist Series Wine Label Design Competition. Through October 19, 2012, aspiring and established artists of all media, aged 21 years or older, are invited to submit original artwork that will be considered for the label of a limited-allocation wine served exclusively at The Capital Grille, whose award-winning wine program is routinely recognized by Wine Spectator magazine. In addition to having his or her artwork adorn the bottles of this year’s featured vintage, the winning artist also will receive an all-expenses-paid trip to the wine country of California’s Napa Valley.
This unique competition celebrates the art of the wine label.  For centuries, wine-label design was about as basic and austere as a shipping label. That changed in 1940 when Baron Phillippe de Rothschild of Chateau Mouton Rothschild began enlisting famous artists, including Joan Miro and Pablo Picasso, to craft a masterpiece for the outside of the bottle that would beautifully convey the work of art inside.
The bottled inspiration for the 2012 Artist Series competition is a 2009 Arrowood Cabernet Sauvignon, blended by winemaker Heidi von der Mehden from Arrowood Winery and George Miliotes, The Capital Grille’s own Master Sommelier. Intensely purple in color, this wine presents aromas of ripe, dark fruits that are matched on the palate with notes of blackberry, plum and blueberry. Mehden and Miliotes describe this exceptional wine as “a natural beauty,” imparting layers of flavor that begin with a deep intensity and end with a soft, rich finish.
Only 1,000 cases of the Arrowood Cabernet will be produced for this year’s Artist Series event, which will take place next spring in all 47 locations of The Capital Grille nationwide. The restaurants will donate a portion of the proceeds from each bottle sold to Share Our Strength in support of its mission to end childhood hunger in America. To date, The Capital Grille has raised more than $1,000,000 on behalf of the organization.
Entrants must be 21 years old or older to enter.  All non-winning entrants retain rights to their artwork.  (The Capital Grille will retain the rights to the winning artwork, only.)
To enter, use the medium of your choice to create an original piece of art that captures the essence of this exclusive, world-class Cabernet Sauvignon. Entries should be original artwork and will be accepted through October 19, 2012. Entries will be accepted via mail or email. To enter, visit http://www.thecapitalgrille.com/enter/ for contest rules and details.

Visual Arts Competition - Babes with Blades Theater Company

CHICAGO, IL (April 2012)-- Babes With Blades Theatre Company (BWBTC) - a theatre company specializing in telling women's stories using the art of stage combat -announces the launch of their second Inspiring Sword & Pen (IS&P) competition.  Designed by BWBTC to connect artists of both the performing and visual arts, IS&P is looking to engage members of the visual arts community to create the inspirational spark for a new play.
The competition, which begins April 1st, 2012 and closes July 31st, 2012, seeks pieces of any medium of visual art to inspire a story for BWBTC's international playwriting competition, Joining Sword & Pen (JS&P).  The winning piece of the IS&P, announced in September of 2012, will come to life on stage in the spring of 2014 through the full production of the winning JS&P script.
For additional information, or to see IS&P winner Victoria Szilagyi’s painting, Erinyes, please visit http://babeswithblades.

IS&P 2012 Submission Requirements

Submission REQUIREMENTS:
1. U.S. and international, male and female artists’ submissions will be accepted.
2. If you wish to submit created art:
a. It must be within your power to surrender rights to the submission.
b. The work must NOT be submitted elsewhere for the duration of the competition.
3. If you wish to submit “found” art:
a. We will ONLY accept “found” images of artworks already in the public domain.
b. You must include the title and location of the source, and be able to produce verification that you took the picture of the artwork that you are sending. If we have any doubts as to the origin of the image, we will not consider it.
c. If more than one person submits a photo of a public-domain work, the first-received photo will be considered the only entry of that image.
Please Consider:
1. The previous winners, rules, and guidelines of the JS&P Playwriting Competition.
2. The mission, members, past productions, and interests of BWBTC.
3. We typically perform in small, black box theatres – and the laws of physics do apply to us! Small casts & simple settings will be favored, and any hi-tech hijinx depicted will need to be reproducible on stage (that said, keep in mind that theatre is capable of wondrous flights of fancy and illusion… we have yet, however, to see convincing lightsabers in a live venue).
4. We are looking for art that will inspire writers, and be appropriate for this theatre company. Story and character are important. Sensationalism is not. Keywords: Conflict, Engage, Interruption, Power, Relationships, Consequences, Imbalance, Intimate, Story, Unexpected
5. If no entry seems sufficiently evocative of story, we may elect not to choose a winning entry this year.
Submission Guidelines:
1. Submissions are due NO LATER than July 31, 2012.
2. Only DIGITAL submissions will be accepted, to protect your original work (the winner may later choose to ship the original piece for display and potential sale). Submissions must be under 2MB (if we need to see the image in greater detail, we may request a higher-resolution file). Email to swordandpen@babeswithblades.org
IMPORTANT: This will be a BLIND SUBMISSION PROCESS.  This means your email submission should contain:
In the body of the email, full contact information (name, phone numbers, email, mailing address) and the title of the work.
A digital attachment with no reference to the producing artist’s name, signature, or contact information of ANY kind.
This is to ensure that when the selection committe reviews your artwork, it is a blind review. An artist’s identity will only be revealed once a selection has been made.
3. The original incarnation of work submitted will be considered the original creation of the artist, not Works for Hire. The artist will retain all copyright rights and privileges granted thereto.
4. Babes With Blades retains all rights to the photographic representation of work submitted, including the irrevocable and unrestricted right to use, reproduce, and publish said photographs for editorial, trade, advertising, or any other purpose and in any manner or medium; to alter the same without restriction; and to copyright the same.
