The Next Wave Art Salon 2013 Poster Art
$3000 in prize money. No entry/hanging fees, no commission, no jurying and no judges. Sign up here.
4 years ago, a handful of volunteers got together and started an experimental art event. We saw how artists were being excluded from participating in art events based on economic or aesthetic rules set by a cloistered minority. We wanted to see if we could open a spontaneous temporary space for cultural and economic lines to blur and create something different.
The result is a pretty successful little event called The Next Wave Art Salon, and it's based around the following rules:
·         Censorship - All work should be allowed, as long as it doesn't break local laws or create a risk of injury
·         Commission - Artists should keep 100% of whatever they make from selling their work
·         Fees - No artist should have to pay to have their work shown to the public, and the public shouldn't have to pay to see art
·         Jury - Any artist, no matter their age, level or medium should be allowed to participate and show any kind of work
·         Awards - Artists should be rewarded for their time and effort spent birthing something new into the world with cold hard cash
·         Space - Any unoccupied space can be creatively adapted and used for the enjoyment of art
The Details:
Visual artists will be given space to exhibit two pieces of their work (no piece of art can be larger than 10'x10'). Performance and dance artists will have a stage to perform, and film/video will be shown in a multimedia space. The Salon is open to all artists, all ages, all genres. If you have the courage to show it, we will put it up. (excluding art that causes bodily harm to people who gaze on upon it-or stuff that breaks local laws).
This year The Next Wave Art Salon will be held at 166 Symphony Way in downtown Elgin, just one block east of The Centre of Elgin, behind the Douglas Street Bar. The event will take place from 6 to 10 p.m. Friday, Sept. 6 and 4 to 10 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 7. The salon is free and open to the public.

Help me reach more artists!
If you know any artists that might be interested, please send them a link to this post, to the site or to the page on Facebook.   I've witnessed this event touch the lives of some ignored and marginalized artists and I'm hoping to reach more folks as it grows and catches on.
